Journey through the ‘Misty Mountains’

With its rugged mountains and spectacular landscapes, the majestic Knuckles range is beyond a doubt one of the most scenic parts in the Sri Lankan Highlands, and a real paradise for those who love hiking and mountain biking.

Now we offer unique trekking adventures, ranging from a half day to five days, in this oasis for everyone to experience. These scenic trails will take you across the mountains, crystal clear rivers and dense forests to flowing waterfalls, lush tea plantations and traditional little villages, surrounded by colourful home gardens and terraced paddy fields - a refreshing world away from the fast-paced city life.

During your adventure, you can either stay in a cosy bungalow on top of the mountain enjoying a 360 degree view, or in a local house mingling with a local family who have lived there all their lives and may have some interesting stories to tell. If you do happen to be looking for a few modern comforts in the wild, that too can be catered to in a beautiful mountain villa as well.

Located amidst the hills of Kandy, the Ellerton is a beautiful retreat with a rich history of 100 years of inhabitance. Initially built for the manager of a large tea estate, the property is now converted into a boutique hotel retaining its original character and tranquility of the colonial days. Ellerton is situated close to the geographic center of Sri Lanka with a 3 hour drive from Colombo and a 30 minute drive from Kandy. The atmosphere at Ellerton is a comfortable one; with a warm yet comfortable sun while the evenings and nights are relatively cool without the stickiness of the coast nor the distinct chill on the hill country.

Spanning for over 2,400 square feet, Ellerton provides 8 comfortable bedrooms with modern en-suite facilities and a beautiful garden, proving to be one of the best retreats in the district of Kandy for our guests!

Experiential accommodation when camping at Gal Oya National Park’s Explorer by Mahoora.

Explorer by Mahoora is a truly unique way for our clients to experience the Sri Lankan wildlife as the entire experience takes place inside national parks and national reserves across the country. Situated inside the Gal Oya National Park, the makeshift private tented safari camps gives our guests the opportunity for a quintessential Sri Lankan wildlife adventure. Our private tented accommodation comes complete with an en-suite bathroom, beautiful dining set up, unique game drives all in the midst of the exquisite setting of the Gal Oya National Park. The magical setting in the silent wilderness will leave you in awe as you watch the setting alongside the grassland fill up during the rainy season. You will be transported to complete bliss as the traditional flame torch light up and road to the tune of the wind whilst the campfire dances alongside under a starry sky as you sit back and relax while we pamper our guests.

Feedback

Great Experience ..!! It's very hard to choose a favorite part.

We enjoyed all of it. The itinerary was very well planned with a lot of activities plus a little bit of downtime as well. All the hotels have been lovely and had a lot of character. The chauffeur guide was excellent, knowledgeable and accommodating especially with our regular requests to find somewhere to stop for short eats.

We would definitely recommend Sri Lanka as a destination for friends and family to visit.

Our policy in discouraging Animal Cruelty, Tourist Traps and Staged Tourist Shows

Animals Are Friends Too: Discouraging Animal Cruelty, Tourist Traps and Staged Tourist Shows

We at ExJ stay away from tourism experiences that are staged and involve animal cruelty and shopping traps that are contrived to exploit and deceive clients.

Even though some of the popular ‘attractions’ are not included in our programmes due to the above reasons, we have no objections in our clients making their own arrangements with our Drivers to visit these places.

Why we do not promote following attractions

Turtle Hatcheries

As this concept has serious negative aspects in terms of conservation, we do not encourage our visitors to patronize the turtle hatcheries, as not all of them are really turtle-friendly. We instead encourage them to observe turtles in their natural habitats.

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

When we became aware that the animal welfare standards there were questionable, we stopped encouraging our clients to visit the orphanage. We are pleased to observe that the Born Free Foundation has now adopted similar measures.

Elephant back rides – Habarana

There’s uncertainty surrounding the attitude of this place towards animal welfare. There may be a few ethical operators, but in general, we are not in agreement with how the place is run. We all would love a photo of us riding an elephant, but is a lifetime of pain caused to these magnificent mammals really worth a few fleeting likes on social media?

Traditional Village Tour with a Canoe Trip and Bullock-Carts – Habarana

This is a tourist trap where a lot of the trip is ‘staged’ for commercial purposes. Such fake touristic experiences will not give our visitors an idea of what life in the country is really like, so join us as we show you the real side of Sri Lanka. And at the end of every vacation, always ask yourself, “Did you feel that your holiday was ethical, eco-friendly, and reduced environmental impacts?”
